President’s Perspective: Looking Ahead for You

By:

One of the pledges I made as your president was that I would strive to make the Bar a valuable and meaningful part of your professional life.  As evidence that the Bar leaders and staff are helping us fulfill that commitment, consider how we are looking ahead for you:

Looking Ahead for You - Focusing on the Future.  If you set aside no other time for an event that will aid you professionally, set aside February 16 and 17, 2006 for the New Hampshire Bar Association’s Midyear Meeting –taking place this year at the Center of New Hampshire in Manchester.

Day 1, Thursday, Feb. 16 will be a day to help you like no other. We will begin with a piercing look at the Future of the Profession, including perspectives from national and local experts, as well as from your colleagues who’ve spent time looking at the issue.  This program builds on the work of the Fall Conference which focused on visions for influencing the future direction of the legal profession in New Hampshire.

Day 1 of the Midyear Meeting also features a series of fast-moving, informative one-hour Best Practices Seminars, covering technology, “the client of tomorrow,” litigation, transactional law, ethical traps to avoid and other practical subjects.

Looking Ahead for You – Innovative programming. To get you moving at the end of the day on Thursday, you will have the chance to visit our innovative Hall of Sections and Committees. Every Section of the Bar has been asked to set up a booth and develop a “White Paper” covering the hot topics in their area of the law.  Like a shopper in a mall, you can travel from booth to booth and gather White Papers in those areas of law in which you practice, and ask questions about topics on those White Papers.  It also gives you the opportunity to explore areas of the law that you might not be familiar with, and talk with section members staffing those tables.  You’ll see first-hand why section membership can be a good value for you.  Every section from Public Sector Law to Family Law, from Federal Practice to Real Estate Law is scheduled to be on hand.  We’ll also mix some fun and entertainment into your “shopping” trip.  It will be an experience like none you’ve had at our meetings.

Looking Ahead for You – Jay Foonberg on Small Firm Management. On Day 2 of the Midyear Meeting, Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, we have invited nationally-renowned speaker and law practice management guru Jay Foonberg.  If you come from a small or middle-sized law firm, you will come away from this program with insights, tips and resources that you truly cannot afford to do without. Foonberg’s books on starting and running a law practice are perennial best-sellers. Here’s your chance to hear from him first-hand in an all-day program at an affordable cost.

In the works are some surprise programs and guests for the Midyear Meeting that you will hear about very soon.

So set aside February 16 and 17, 2006 – at the Center of New Hampshire/Radisson Hotel.

Looking Ahead for You – Budget to Attend the Annual Meeting. In most law firms, it’s budget time, and I encourage you to set aside the resources and the time to attend The 2006 NHBA Annual Meeting on June 22-25, 2006.  This meeting will be a mix of the traditional and the new – an unparalleled opportunity to unwind and get to know your fellow Bar members in a relaxed setting.  It is being held for the first time at the Mountain View Grand, a new four-star resort in Whitefield.  Firms have historically supported the attendance of their members at this meeting.  Let the tradition continue. The benefits for you and your firm may be intangible, but they are real.

Looking Ahead for All of Us - Energetic Leadership.  If we are to continue reaching out to all of our members, we need dynamic, passionate and effective leaders.  In Richard McNamara, our President-Elect, and Eleanor Dahar, our Vice President, we have two people who seek the best for our profession, and are willing to put in hard work to continue building a promising Association for all of us.   And I am pleased to tell you that Ellen Arnold, who ran for vice president last year, will run again, hoping to join the NHBA leadership team.  She is a remarkable lawyer, judge and person, and someone who understands the concerns and issues of practicing law in the 21st Century, and the dynamic forces that will affect our profession in New Hampshire.

There are other Board of Governors’ positions on the ballot in the coming year, including the traditional one-year positions of secretary and treasurer, a three-year Governor-at-large position, and county seats in Belknap, Carroll, Hillsborough North and South, Strafford and Sullivan counties.  I hope you’ll consider joining our Board.  The nomination petitions will be published in the next issue of Bar News.

Looking Ahead for You – Keeping You in the Loop. In print or at meetings, I will continue to communicate with you regarding the countless ways in which the Association is reaching out in countless ways to our newer lawyers, to the courts, our sections and committees; to your local and county bars, to other legal professional groups such as the NH Trial Lawyers and NH Women’s Bar Association, to the legislature, the governor and soon, our congressional delegation.

I encourage you to join us as we work to make your Bar more valuable for you, and, please, join us in our efforts to create a world where lawyers are recognized as valuable leaders and contributors in all aspects of society.
