On October 29, a press conference was held at the State House to unveil the first Spanish edition of “A Legal Handbook for Women in New Hampshire” —“Manual De Derechos De Las Mujeres De New Hampshire.” Theresa de Langis, executive director of the NH Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), congratulated the more than a dozen people who worked on the book— which took two years to translate and publish—for their support.  The creation of the original handbook was funded by a $5,000 grant from the NH Bar Foundation in 1996. The Foundation has continued to support the project with funding for updated editions.

At the press conference, Gov. John Lynch personally thanked everyone involved in the funding, creation, and translation of the Handbook. He applauded the new Spanish edition saying, “Access to legal resources and our judicial system must be available to all residents, and language should not serve as a barrier.”

Established in 1969 under legislative mandate, the role of the CSW is to advocate on behalf of women in New Hampshire. The CSW, located in the State House Annex Room 414, maintains a resource library with titles covering a broad range of women’s issues. CSW publications are available online and in hardcopy. Contact the CSW at (603) 271-2660 or online at www.nh.gov/csw.
