Milford Triumphs in ‘We the People’
Milford High School won the state championship of the “We the People—The Citizen and the Constitution” for the second year in a row.
The competition, conducted by the NHBA Law-Related Education program, took place Jan. 13, at the Legislative Office Building in Concord. More than 20 attorneys, judges, and government officials volunteered parts of their day to judge three high school teams in the competition – Milford, Nashua High School South, and John Stark Regional High School, Weare. (It was Stark’s first appearance in a number of years, and the first for its teacher-coach, Dan Nolan.)
All three teams performed well, posting closely bunched scores on the students’ performances on oral presentations and their responses to questions from judging panels on the application of principles of the U.S. Constitution. The judges ask questions on particular aspects of the Constitution developed in advance and then pose follow-up questions that often raise timely issues. For example, in a unit regarding the separation of powers, judges asked students their opinions as to whether congressional confirmation hearings of judicial nominees are an effective check-and-balance, and to put the Bill of Rights in context with current debates over the balance between national security and individual liberties.
Executive Councilors Ray Burton and Deborah Pignatelli, whose district includes Milford and Nashua, took a break from their State House duties to witness part of the competition and to congratulate the students on their participation.
Milford received a $1,000 donation from the NH Bar Foundation to jump-start its fundraising for competition expenses for the national competition in Washington, D.C., on April 29- May 1.
