For the Literary Lawyer
The American Inns of Court
Warren E. Burger Writing Competition
The American Inns of Court sponsors the Warren E. Burger Writing Competition to encourage thoughtful consideration of the practical application of the highest principles of professionalism in the American legal community.
The author should address one or more aspects of legal excellence, civility, ethics or professionalism within the legal profession. The selected issue(s) should be of contemporary significance with clear relevance to the legal community at large. Submissions must be original and unpublished works of 10,000-25,000words including footnotes. Either independent or collaborative submissions are allowed.
Membership with the American Inns of Court is not a requirement for consideration. The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2006. The author of the winning submission will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and the winning essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review.
For information or questions, contact Cindy Dennis at 800/233-3590 ext. 104 or at cdennis@innsofcourt.org. You may also obtain submissions forms on-line.
Fifth Annual National Fiction Competition for Lawyers
SEAK, Inc. announces its legal fiction writing contest. The competition is open to any licensed attorney in the U.S. or its territories and both short stories and novel excerpts may be submitted. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2006. For a complete list of rules—which are strictly enforced—call SEAK at (508) 548-7023 or go to the Web site at www.seak.com. SEAK’s annual workshop, Legal Fiction Writing for Lawyers, will be held Oct. 20-22, 2006 on Cape Cod. For the first time, in 2006 a cash award of $1,000 will be offered to the First Prize winner, but the rewards go far beyond the money. For example, 2002 winner attorney Claire Matturo (author of Skinny Dipping: A Novel of Suspense, William Morrow, 2004) used her win to launch her career as a novelist.
