Bar Foundation News: Bar Foundation Accepting IOLTA Grant Applications
Every year the NH Bar Foundation makes grants from the Interest On Lawyers Trust Accounts program (IOLTA) to nonprofit organizations or educational institutions whose missions or programs provide: a) civil legal services to the disadvantaged, or b) public education relating to the courts and legal matters.
The Foundation awarded more than $1.5 million dollars to eight organizations during the last grant cycle. If you have not received an application directly from the NH Bar Foundation or applied in previous years, please contact the Foundation prior to submitting a proposal to determine the eligibility of your program. Applications are available online at www.nhbarfoundation.org or by calling 603-224-6942 x 253. The grant period runs from June 1, 2006 though May 31, 2007. Applications must be received at the NH Bar Foundation 112 Pleasant St., Concord, NH, by 5 pm., March 31, 2006.
The IOLTA program is a partnership between New Hampshire lawyers and the banking community that has resulted in a statewide grants program devoted to providing access to equal justice for all New Hampshire residents. The interest that funds the IOLTA grants program is generated through “client funds that are nominal in amount or held for a short period of time” which would not normally generate interest.
There are currently 40 IOLTA banks of which 14 are recognized as IOLTA Leadership Banks. Leadership bank accounts yield 2 percent or higher, exceed the bank’s standard NOW account rate, and waive routine services charges. The New Hampshire Bar Foundation awards these funds for charitable purposes under guidelines set forth by the New Hampshire Supreme Court.
For information on establishing an IOLTA account, call Mary White, Finance and IOLTA Operations Coordinator at (603) 224-6942 x 110. For IOLTA grant information, contact Susan Noon, Program and Communications Director, at (603) 224-6942 x 253.
