Legal Research - Free Access to Westlaw at Pierce Law Library
Franklin Pierce Law Center alumni and attorneys who join the library can obtain free onsite access to WestlawPro at the Franklin Pierce Law Center library.
“We believe WestlawPRO is an important service for our patrons,” says Library Director Judith Gire. “Onsite access to WestlawPRO is now a benefit for our alumni as well an any attorney who is a member of our library. No password is needed, but the WestlawPro license limits access to two onsite workstations located on the library’s main floor. WestlawPRO offers many of the same functions available on Westlaw.”
WestlawPro functions include: “Find” to retrieve by document citation or name; “Terms & Connections” or “”Natural Language” searching; limiting searches using “Locate,” selecting databases by identifier or from the directory; West’s unique “KeySearch” and “Topic and Key Number” features to access case law; hypertext linking; and printing lists or documents to the attached printer. WestlawPRO also provides KeyCite that is Westlaw’s equivalent to Shepardizing for validation and updating.
According to Gire, “Although WestlawPRO does not include all databases available on Westlaw, the collection provided should meet the legal research needs of most attorneys.”
WestlawPRO databases include: all federal and state case law, statutes, court rules and administrative materials; docket information for all federal courts as well as courts in larger states and counties; American Jurisprudence 2d and Corpus Juris Secundum; American Jurisprudence Proof of Facts and Trials Library; American Law Reports; Causes of Action; Federal Library including Wright & Miller; Restatements of the Law; American Jurisprudence Legal Forms 2d; American Jurisprudence Pleading and Practice Forms Annotated; Fletcher Cyclopedia of Corporations; Nichols Cyclopedia of Legal Forms Annotated; Couch on Insurance; Hawkland Uniform Commercial Code Series; McQuillan on Municipal Corporations; Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice 2d; Personal Injury Damages Library; and Real Estate Library. WestlawPro also offers a selection of journals and law reviews and West’s Legal Directory.

Casemaker Is Constantly Improving
Casemaker, a free NHBA member benefit, has undertaken a series of enhancements to better serve its users. A unique online legal research tool with a powerful search engine that provides access to a combination of state and federal materials supported by a consortium of state bars, Casemaker now includes 24 states and serves more than 438,000 American lawyers.
Casemaker is accessible to NHBA members through the For Members area at www.nhbar.org (User name and password required.)
Supercode: Enacted session laws that affect the last codified versions are listed in the smaller screen on the right. Listed session law enactments are available to help the user determine whether the later enactments alter the applicable law, depending on the date of the enactment.
Federal Library enhancements: Supercode is also available in the U.S. Code portion in the Federal Library. Also, Casemaker users now can search caselaw by individual circuit courts. West citations will be added to current circuit court decisions going forward.
Nationwide Collections: Under this heading area in the library, it is now possible to search all of the state libraries for caselaw or ethics opinions.
Added State Libraries: See accompanying list for added state libraries that are online or in the works. In addition, Casemaker has committed to add non-consortium state libraries to eventually provide 50-state coverage.
Hein Online Library: The Hein Online Ohio library is up and running on Casemaker. Access is available to all Casemaker members on a free trial basis until May 1, 2006. The library contains some of the most-cited law reviews in the country and the top 30 law journals from schools such as Harvard, Columbia, Yale, and Duke. The Federal Library includes the Federal Register from its inception in 1936 as well as a weekly compilation of Presidential documents and more. Access to Hein Online is available through the Ohio library.
