Bar News - September 21, 2001

Meet the Board of Governors

MEMBERS OF THE NH Bar's Board of Governors for the 2001-2002 year began their tenure at the conclusion of this year's Annual Meeting. This is the latest installment in a series of interviews with board members.

Richard Y. Uchida
Secretary

Partner, Hebert & Uchida, Concord; J.D., Franklin Pierce Law Center; admitted to NH Bar in 1984.

Years in practice: 17 years.

Areas of practice: Real Estate and business transactions, professional responsibility.

Bar activities: Section memberships, Administration of the Bar Work Group, Outreach Task Force, Ethics Committee, Bar News Editorial Board, Professionalism Committee.

Other activities: Colby College Board of Overseers, Capitol Center for the Arts Facilities Committee.

Key issues facing Bar Association and legal profession: First, ensuring that the values that make us a profession remain intact, unhindered and unfettered by interference by third parties, and constantly reinforcing those values among all lawyers. The values we place on our role as officers of the court, the maintenance of confidentiality in our client communications, the delivery of independent, thoughtful and valuable advice, and the loyalty to the client must not be controlled by outside parties. The medical profession has allowed such "de-professionalizing" to occur in the name of greater profits - all to its detriment. We can not afford to let this happen, if we want to continue to be mainstays in society.

The second issue is unique to the Bar Association. We must continue to test the relevancy of the Association - the services it delivers, the values and beliefs that it stands for - against the needs of our members. I sense that now, more than ever, our members need an Association that they believe is standing with them and fighting for them. We haven't done the best of jobs in fulfilling these expectations, but we must in the future, if we are to continue to be a vital organization in our members' lives.

Areas or initiatives you would like to pursue as a board member: I would like to continue the Assocation's outreach efforts to our members in the areas described above. The past year's work on Outreach has paid off in spades in terms of goodwill among members who attended Outreach programs and relationships with the county bars. We need to do more and different outreach work.

Patrick F. Harrigan
Governor-at-Large

Chubrich & Harrigan, Portsmouth; JD, University of Maine, 1986; admitted to NH Bar in 1987.

Years in practice: 15 years.

Areas of practice: Civil litigation, including family law, personal injury and bankruptcy.

Bar activities: Admitted to Mass. Bar in 1986; member, NHBA Publication Committee; participant in We the People and Lawyer in Every School programs.

Key issues facing Bar Association and legal profession: Restoring public confidence in the judiciary and in attorneys.

Areas or initiatives you would like to pursue as a board member: I would like to work with Bar members, the public, the Legislature and judiciary to address the erosion of confidence in the judiciary. I also believe that the NHBA must continue to emphasize programs to enhance our professionalism and civility.

John S. Kitchen
Governor, Belknap County

Hall, Hess, Stewart, Murphy & Brown, Laconia; JD, Boston University, 1973; LLM in taxation, B.U., 1999; admitted to NH Bar in 1974.

Years in practice: 26 years.

Areas of practice: Trust, estate, probate and disability law.

Bar activities: NHBA CLE Committee; member, American Bar Association and Belknap County Bar Association.

Key issues facing Bar Association and legal profession: Increasing the availability of legal services; promoting independence of the judiciary; continuing legal education; addressing collegiality issues; providing membership services.

Areas or initiatives you would like to pursue as a board member: I'd like to reach out to the disabled community to help improve the delivery of legal services to them. Also, it's important that we negotiate with insurers to make health insurance more affordable for New Hampshire Bar members.
