Bar Members Consider Future of Law Practice in NH
LARGE TURNOUTS, LIVELY discussions and strongly positive evaluations have marked the success to date of the Bar's Local Bar Outreach program, titled "Can the legal profession survive the dot.comet?" The program, which includes a short PowerPoint presentation and ample time for questions and discussion (and 1 NHMCLE Ethics credit hour), has been held this fall at meetings of county Bars in Coos, Cheshire, Carroll, and Strafford counties, and at the William Batchelder Inns of Court in Concord.
The next local bar outreach program will be held in conjunction with the Merrimack County Bar Association on Jan. 10 at the Common Man Restaurant in Concord. (For information or reservations, contact Chris Pollock at 225-9900.) Other county, local or specialty bars are encouraged to contact Richard Y. Uchida, chair of the Bar Outreach Task Force, or staff liaison Denice DeStefano (224-6942) to add the program to their schedule.
"We have been very pleased with the response to the program," said Uchida. "Bar members have been very appreciative that people from the Bar's Board of Governors have made the effort to come and talk to them." More than 40 Carroll County attorneys turned out for the initial session in Wolfeboro, 20 attorneys (nearly the entire county bar membership) attended the program in Coos, and similar numbers attended programs held in Rochester and Keene.
As its title suggests, the presentation provides an overview of the potentially severe impact that changing economic and market forces, such as the Internet, may be having on our profession, and offers ideas on how individual practitioners can add "value" to their services and influence the long-term viability of their legal practices. In addition, presenters provide an economic overview of the state economy and the demand for legal services in NH.
