Pine Haven School for Boys Takes Part in Law Day
Tracy McGraw, an attorney with Getman Stacy Schulthess & Steere, gets students involved on Law Day, May 5. Atty. McGraw, who has been a member of the NH Bar since 2001, visited the Pine Haven School for boys in Suncook, NH and spoke with students about the structure of the courts and what happens in the conduct of cases. She received an enthusiastic response from her listeners.
“You never know what to expect when you walk into a classroom. The students usually have preconceived notions about the legal system, and, specifically, the role of lawyers. This year was no different. The students in my classrooms were full of energy, questions, and opinions. In each class, we discussed scenarios of hypothetical civil cases, and involved the students in play-acting. One of the students began questioning the facts, the legal arguments, and then argued for one side of the issue, including illustrating the issues at the board. He argued his points to the “student jury”, which were based upon a factual situation that we all created together, and convinced the two hold-out members of the student jury of his position. At the end of the session, after the students left the room, he said that he wanted to be a lawyer. I would not be surprised to find this young man’s name in the bar directory in the future. Seeing the enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the students revitalizes your personal perspective, and strengthens your commitment to continue in your chosen practice and to be a voice for others.”
