Generous Portrait Donations Result in Surplus To Fund Grants
The tremendous outpouring of philanthropic donations for the portrait of Chief Justice David A. Brock resulted in a surplus of funds. Brock designated the surplus to go to the New Hampshire Bar Foundation’s Hon. William F. Batchelder Fund, which supports legal services for low-income and other disadvantaged people in the state. These funds are disbursed through the Bar Foundation’s Justice Grants Program.
The Hon. William F. Batchelder Fund was established by Hon. John Maher and his wife, Skye, with an initial gift of $50,000 and an additional pledge of $50,000 to be matched by Bar Foundation fundraising efforts. This endowed fund serves as a tribute to retired Supreme Court Associate Justice William F. Batchelder, who served on the Court from 1981 to 1995. The donations from the Brock portrait will be matched by the Mahers as part of their contribution to the fund this year.
