Dana Bisbee Tapped to Head DES
GOV. JEANNE SHAHEEN has nominated NH attorney (George) Dana Bisbee to head the state’s Department of Environmental Services.
If confirmed, Bisbee would succeed DES Commissioner Robert Varney, who was appointed by President Bush as an administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Region One, headquartered in Boston.
Bisbee, 49, has served as assistant commissioner of the DES since 1995. Prior to joining the DES, he worked at the state Attorney General’s Office from 1981 to 1995, as chief of the Environmental Protection Bureau and as deputy attorney general.
Bisbee served in the Peace Corps in Central Africa before earning his law degree from Georgetown University in 1981. He was admitted to the NH Bar the same year.
Shaheen said she is confident Bisbee will continue to lead the DES in developing cutting-edge environmental initiatives. In the last five years, NH DES has "led the nation in developing innovative, first-in-the-nation solutions to environmental challenges, from clean power to clean marine engines to reducing mercury emissions," said Shaheen.
Bisbee said that he considers it "an honor" to have been nominated by Shaheen. "I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this nomination with the Executive Council," he said. He declined comment on possible initiatives he might undertake if confirmed. "I’d like to let the confirmation process run its course," he said.
Bisbee’s nomination, as well as Gary Hicks’ nomination as Superior Court judge and attorney Tom Getz’s as chair of the Public Utilities Commission, were scheduled to go before the Executive Council for a confirmation vote on October 10, as Bar News went to press. Attorney Peter C. Hildreth was confirmed as the state’s bank commissioner by the Executive Council on Sept. 19.
