THE NEW HAMPSHIRE Superior Court has selected attorney Howard A. Helrich of Hopkinton as Merrimack County Attorney, replacing Michael Th. Johnson, who recently resigned from the position to work for the International War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague. Helrich will finish Johnson’s term, which expires on Dec. 31, 2002.

Helrich was sworn into office on October 25.

Helrich previously served as deputy County Attorney since 1992 and as assistant Merrimack County Attorney from 1985 to 1992. He received his J.D. from Vermont Law School in 1983 and was admitted to the NH Bar in the same year.

Helrich is a member of the National District Attorneys’ Association, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Sexual As sault Protocol Revision Committee and the Concord Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence. He has also been an instructor at the NH Police Standards and Training Academy and for the Attorney General’s Office and US Dept. of Transportation.

A Selection Committee reviewed applications and recommendations and interviewed candidates for the position of Merrimack County Attorney before selecting Helrich. A statement issued by the committee said that it was "impressed with the qualifications, experience and commitment to public service of the applicants for the vacancy." The committee’s recommendation of Helrich was approved by the full Superior Court.

The Selection Committee consisted of the following justices: Senior Associate Justice George L. Manias, Associate Justice Kenneth R. McHugh, Associate Justice Harold L. Perkins, Associate Justice Kathleen A. McGuire and Chief Justice Walter L. Murphy.
