Bar Mobilizes to Assist Reservists and Military Personnel
"I would deeply appreciate any assistance members of the Bar can give. . . We want to be prepared ." (Col. Peter Duffy, judge advocate for the NH Army National Guard)
The following is a message from Ed Adamsky, chair of the Bar's Elder Law Section, John Kitchen, chair of the Estate Planning & Probate Section, and Virginia Martin, the NHBA's director of legal services.
THE NEW HAMPSHIRE Bar Association through its Pro Bono Program is enlisting volunteers to serve on a special referral panel to ensure all reservists called up for active duty overseas have access to legal services for basic estate planning - a will and a durable power of attorney. Depending on the level of mobilization, current military personnel may require assistance as well. Although most of the demand will be concentrated in the southern tier, we would like to have coverage statewide.
This is a Pro Bono effort that differs from our usual service to indigent people. We are asking attorneys to volunteer to help serve the men and women who are called on to defend our country, without regard to their financial circumstances.
Participation calls for attorneys who are able to:
- Provide legal services (will and durable power of attorney) at no charge;
- Provide legal services within a short timeframe (as little as a day's notice).
At present, it is impossible to know the extent of the need for these legal services. We are aware, however, that in recent days some attorneys have assisted reservists with last-minute estate planning. Our goals are to meet current needs and be prepared should a larger effort be required.
If you wish to be included on the referral list for this project, please e-mail Virginia Martin (Pro Bono Program director) at gmartin@nhbar.org or click here to download the sign-up form.
