DES Commissioner Addresses NHBA Environmental Section
NH Division of Environmental Services Commissioner Thomas S. Burack was the guest speaker during a meeting of the NHBA Environmental Section on Feb. 22, 2007. Discussion included, among other topics, the handling of emissions in relation to “greenhouse” gases contributing to changes in the earth’s climate; the environmental impact of economic and population growth on the state; bills being tracked through the Legislature; and the relationship between municipalities and the division’s agencies in managing resources. “We want to take a more integrated, big-picture approach to these challenges,” said Burack.
Burack, who took over the reigns of the division in November 2006, also explained the DES’ $150 million budget and how it does not simply cover just operating expenses but is also distributed as grants to municipalities and others for various environmental programs. He mentioned that the division would like to see an increase in certain fees to fund state efforts in the area of waste removal, recycling education, groundwater protection, and renewable energy resources.
