NHLA Expands North Country Presence
The Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation recently awarded New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) a $45,000 grant to create the Coös County Legal Access Project. NHLA was one of 18 organizations to receive support from the fund.
The project’s mission is to improve and expand the delivery of legal services to residents living in the northernmost areas of Coös County. The financial support received from the Tillotson Fund will enable NHLA to hire a part-time paralegal who would work in both Colebrook and Berlin.
NHLA will also broaden its overall outreach efforts in the Colebrook area to ensure that those potentially eligible for the assistance are familiar with the organization and the services it provides and will increase staffing in its Berlin satellite office as well, including being the base for the new paralegal. The law firm Waystack and King will allow NHLA to operate limited office hours in its Colebrook location.
“This grant will enable us to fill a significant unmet need for low-income and elderly people in Coos County,” said John Tobin, NHLA executive director. “We are extremely grateful to the Tillotson Fund for enabling us to enhance our capacity to serve people in the Berlin and Colebrook areas. We are also grateful to Waystack and King for their generosity in allowing us to utilize their office space.”
The Neil and Louis Tillotson Fund, an advised fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, is a special grant program to benefit the North Country. The fund was established with the philosophy and principles of Neil Tillotson in mind: Be humble, be creative and be kind.
NHLA has maintained an office in Berlin and has been serving the North Country for over 35 years. Low-income or elderly area residents in need of legal assistance should contact NHLA’s Littleton office at 603-444-8000 or 1-800-548-1886.
