Meet the Board of Governors
MEMBERS OF THE NH Bar’s Board of Governors for the 2001-2002 year represent a cross-section of the active membership of the Bar, coming from a variety of practice areas, educational backgrounds and parts of the state. This is the latest installment in a series of interviews with board members.
Jay S. Clough

Years in practice: 17 years.
Areas of practice: Probate, criminal, motor vehicle.
Key issues facing the Bar Association and legal profession: Legislative initiatives and confidence in the courts.
Areas or initiatives you would like to pursue as a board member: Keeping the prospective of the smaller firms visible to the overall Board of Governors.
James J. Godbout
Governor, Coos County
New Hampshire Public Defender, Littleton; JD, Franklin Pierce Law Center, 1993; admitted to NH Bar in 1996.
Years in practice: 8 years.
Area of practice: Criminal defense.
Bar activities: Member of the Connecticut Bar since 1993; member, NHBA Member Services Initiatives Committee; participant in the Bar’s Lawyer in Every School program.
Other activities: Ombudsman, NH Committee for Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve.
Key issues facing the Bar Association and legal profession: Universal access to legal services, public perception of lawyers and judges, and proper funding of the court system.
Areas or initiatives you would like to pursue as a board member: Lobbying on behalf of North Country practitioners, and the clients they serve, who have long suffered as a consequence of inadequate judicial resources at the district court level. A full-time circuit judge and consolidation of courts are but two possible solutions to this vexing issue. I’d also like to work on expanding NHBA online services and resources for members and the public.
Marilyn B. McNamara

Areas of practice: Family law; LARC executive director.
Bar activities: Member, NHBA Professionalism Committee and NH Bar Foundation.
Other activities: Member, NH Judicial Selection Commission, Pro Se Task Force and Mediation Committee.
Key issues facing the Bar Association and legal profession: The provision of access to justice to all citizens – without regard to income – through planning and funding. Also, the funding of our judicial system.
