In Memoriam - John F. Cullity

JOHN FRANCIS "JACK" CULLITY, a New Hampshire trial attorney for over 40 years and a decorated combat veteran, died last month at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton after a long illness. He was 71.

Cullity was born in Manchester Nov. 8, 1929, the son of Ellinor (Neilsen) (Cullity) Sheehan and Francis X. Cullity, who died in 1931. His stepfather was attorney John J. Sheehan, whom his mother married in 1943.

He resided in Goffstown and spent many summers in Moultonborough. He had been a resident of the NH Veterans Home for the past two years.

Cullity was a graduate of St. Joseph High School for Boys, New Hampton Prep School and the College of the Holy Cross, class of 1952. Upon graduation from college, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of captain. He was a combat veteran of the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the U.N. Service Medal and the National Defense Medal.

When his tour of duty was over, Cullity went on to Boston College and Boston University Law School, where he attained his law degree in 1958. He was admitted to the NH Bar the same year.

Cullity was a successful trial lawyer in Manchester for more than 40 years, initially at the firm of Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green, then with his own firm of Cullity, Kelley and McDowell, and finally at John F. Cullity, PA. His obituary described him as "a lawyer for the common people" who did much pro bono work.

Retired New Hampshire Superior Court Judge William O’Neil described Cullity as "a terrific guy."

"He was the most fair and honest person you could ever imagine to have as a friend. Jack was an outstanding athlete – everyone knows that – but he was also a very good trial lawyer. He was a gentleman, I don’t know how else to put it," O’Neil said.

Cullity was an outstanding athlete, having enjoyed successful football careers in high school, college and the military. He also volunteered as an assistant football coach at the former Bishop Bradley High School. He was inducted into the Queen City Athletic Hall of Fame this summer.

Cullity was a member of the Holy Cross Alumni Association, Marine Corps League, Lakes Region Detachment and Elks Club.

Survivors include four daughters, Lizbeth Cullity Vieux of Haiti and Sierra Leone, Africa, Lauren Cullity Sanford of Shapleigh, Maine, Kristin Cullity Stewart of So. Salem, NY and Karen Cullity Nelson of Rye; their mother, Anne Cullity; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Karen Sheehan Lord of Manchester, Susan Pearsall of Northfield and Mary Sheehan-Moore of Parkton, Md.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, PO Box 1097, Meredith, NH 03253-1097.

In memory of our colleague John F. Cullity, the New Hampshire Bar Association’s Board of Governors has contributed to the New Hampshire Bar Foundation, 112 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301.
