Outreach Program Continues
When the Legislature returns to session next month, several judicial reform initiatives will be on the agenda. Although the momentum for far-reaching changes appears to have slowed, several significant proposals remain on the agenda in both chambers of the Legislature, including CACR 5, a constitutional amendment that would give the Legislature the ultimate authority over rule making and procedures in the courts.
CACR 5, changes to the judicial discipline process and proposals for renewable terms for judges are discussed in this year’s Member Outreach program, which has been presented so far at seven sites around the state this fall – usually as part of county bar meetings. The program features videotaped debates involving key players in these issues and offers ample time for discussion. "The purpose is to solicit input as well as to provide information," said Richard Y. Uchida, chair of the Member Outreach Task Force.
The program will be presented next at the NH Women’s Bar Association board meeting at the NH Bar Center on December 19, at the Merrimack County Bar Association meeting at the Marriott Courtyard on January 16, and at the Grafton County Bar Association (location to be determined) on January 31. If your local bar group (or Inn of Court) would like to schedule one of these sessions, contact Uchida at 224-5004 immediately. The program takes slightly more than one hour, including discussion, and can be conducted in conjunction with a regularly scheduled meeting at a mutually convenient time.
