Attorney Training for Domestic Violence Emergency (DOVE) Project
The DOVE Project is a program of the NH Bar Association Pro Bono Referral System that assists victims of domestic abuse to re-establish safety and stability in their lives and their homes.
Many new lawyers are drawn to their profession in the pursuit of justice for all citizens. The Pro Bono Program’s DOVE Project is in a unique position to satisfy their idealism by providing them with the opportunity to participate in a program that restores the balance of power to the victims of domestic violence, particularly in the courtroom.
Recognized both locally and nationally, since 1993 the DOVE Project has served many hundreds of survivors of domestic abuse by linking them with pro bono lawyers so they can receive quality legal representation at final restraining order hearings. This service speaks meaningfully of the compassion of the New Hampshire Bar Association. Representation by a DOVE attorney significantly increases a victim’s likelihood of prevailing in court proceedings, obtaining a restraining order and essential further orders to provide the temporary means for self-sufficiency.
Without these further orders providing for child support, use of home and vehicle, compensation for medical expenses related to the victim’s abuse, and possibly for damaged property, many victims feel compelled to reconcile with their batterers in order to avoid potential homelessness or destitution. The DOVE Project has proved to be an effective program for many victims who have struggled to leave their batterer’s control and abuse.
On Thursday, October 18, 2007 the DOVE Project will sponsor a seminar offering a hands-on learning experience suited to new lawyers, focusing on NH RSA 173-B, new case law, and legislative updates that impact domestic violence cases. The faculty includes a judge, private and legal services practitioners, law enforcement personnel and a domestic violence professional from the NH Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. A comprehensive manual is also provided which serves as a resource for the future.
This live CLE seminar is offered at the reduced rate of $50 for attorneys willing to join the DOVE Project and commit to taking two cases per year. Current Pro Bono and DOVE volunteers will also be given the reduced rate. The program includes seminar materials, lunch and refreshments.
If you would like to register for this DOVE CLE, please see the registration form on this page. For further information on the DOVE project call Pam Dodge at 603/224-6942 or email her at pdodge@nhbar.org.
