Agenda Tackles Court Budget Woes, Celebrates Bar's Accomplishments
PROGRAMS AND EVENTS of this year’s NHBA Mid-Year Membership Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, address both the challenges lawyers in New Hampshire face and the opportunities that the 21st century presents to the profession.
How Court Funding Affects You and Your Clients
A morning CLE seminar, "The Court Funding Squeeze: Impacts on You and Your Clients" from 9 a.m. to 12 noon will focus on the difficulties posed for practicing lawyers by the funding constraints of the state judicial branch. Bar members will hear about the budget squeeze from representatives of the Superior, district and probate courts, as well as from a national expert on judicial issues. The program also features a brief update on the status of pending legislation of interest to the Bar.
Celebrating Your Colleagues
At the Mid-Year Meeting Awards Luncheon, NHBA President Peter Hutchins will present the Distinguished Service to the Public Award to W. John Funk and the Vickie Bunnell Community Service Award to Paul Desjardins, of Lancaster. Funk is being honored for his ongoing work in support of civil legal services, including his collaboration with the banking community to maximize returns for the IOLTA program. (See article on page 8 for more on the award winners, and turn to page 3 for a list of the pace-setting Bar Foundation Leadership Banks.) Justice John T. Broderick, Jr. will serve as the luncheon speaker. (NHBA President Peter Hutchins will also provide a progress report on a number of member and public service initiatives of the Bar. See page 4 for a preview of his remarks.)
Technology That Can Reduce Cost of Practice
In the afternoon, take a virtual test-drive of some of the emerging technologies that can enable you to become a better-informed and more efficient lawyer well equipped to serve clients’ needs. Toby Brown, a law practice management expert from Utah, will provide an overview of how the Internet is evolving to provide more services to help you manage your practice. Brown will offer a lively overview of the services available to practitioners in firms of any size. The program will also feature a demonstration of a New Hampshire-specific, affordable online legal research system to be offered through this web site.
Comment on Lawyer Discipline, Bar Admissions
The second half of the afternoon features a discussion of two reform proposals now before the NH Supreme Court – an overhaul of the PCC and a review of the Bar admissions process. (For more on PCC reform, see page 10. See accompanying story on page 1 for details on Bar admission changes.)
