‘We the People…’ Team Seeks Funding for Nationals

David Alcox, teacher/advisor, and Milford students receive "We the People..." State Championship Plaque

Students from Milford High School – winners of the 2008 “We the People… the Citizen and the Constitution” state championship – are preparing to represent New Hampshire in the national tournament held in Washington, DC. May 3-5, 2008.

The “We the People…” competition is sponsored in NH by the NHBA Law Related Education program.

The team is seeking contributions to help fund the travel and competition expense for the national tournament. (The NH Bar Foundation has already made a $1,000 initial contribution to the team.)

The following material is from the team’s fundraising appeal:

“The “We the People…” program is the most extensive education program in the country developed to teach young people about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as well as the principles and values they embody. According to a recent Stanford University study, high school students who participate in the “We the People” program display more political tolerance and feel more politically effective than most adults and students.

“These students have demonstrated the desire to improve the political process of our country. Their spirit of democracy will enhance not only their civic virtue but everyone who comes in contact with them as well. Adults can look towards these students and recognize the good they will bring our state and community for years to come.

“Past members of our state champion teams have served as Senate Pages, won numerous political essay contests, served as delegates to Washington, DC in the US Senate Youth Program, served as delegates to Girls State and Girls Nation, and received substantial scholarships to major colleges based on knowledge and poise attained through the “We the People” program.

“Past members quite often come back to Milford HS and share their experiences with current students and relate the importance of this program and the impact the course has had on their lives.”
