Judicial Branch Issues Annual Report
FOR THE FIRST time in 20 years, the state court system has published a formal annual report.
The report, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2001, will be posted on the judicial branch’s Web site at www.courts.state.nh.us. It provides statistics on case handling and describes initiatives and projects at each court level, along with offering a fiscal overview and sections on technology, relations with the Legislature, and accountability. An introduction from Supreme Court Chief Justice David A. Brock emphasizes the role of the courts’ staff "whose loyalty has never wavered, even in the face of scarce resources, non-stop demands for their services and often intense public scrutiny and criticism." The report prominently features each of the monthly winners of the Spirit of the Judiciary Award.
In his letter, Brock also refers to the court’s approach to reform in the aftermath of the impeachment trial. "I know that we must respond to some of the concerns raised during those proceedings; we have and will continue to do so. But I also firmly believe that we must look to the future, strengthened by our past experiences and with the same commitment and resolve we have always brought to protecting and securing the rights of the citizens of New Hampshire through an independent judiciary."
Court Public Information Officer Laura Kiernan said the report is being mailed to each judicial branch employee, all legislators, the governor and other public officials. It will be made available to jurors and to teachers for educational purposes. Kiernan said the report was largely prepared in-house, with 3,000 copies initially printed at a cost of $6,177 – a fact noted on the back cover of the report.
"We consider this to be an important educational vehicle," said Kiernan. "It is an objective assessment of the [fiscal] year 2001 for the courts and it provides a good resource for students and the public to learn about how our courts work."
In coming issues of Bar News, excerpts of the report will appear on an occasional basis.
