Bar News - September 5, 2008 Emery and Ryan on “Why We’re Here” Bar News asked Judges Ryan and Emery to state their personal philosophies. Their replies follow: "I read a sign in front of a church that said, ‘We should all strive to become the person our dog thinks we are.’ I think that sums it up pretty well. We should use the advantages and opportunities presented to us to improve, not only ourselves, but also those around us. We all should strive to become the best persons we can be. If you make a mistake, admit it, take your punishment, learn from it, and move on." –Judge John Emery "I believe in the ethic of helping one another—I believe that’s what we’re put on earth for…and especially to help children. That’s why in my practice I so often represented the interests of children.
