Milford, Amherst Are Mock Trial Champs
MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL this year entered two teams in the NHBA Mock Trial Competition and ended up sweeping the state finals, held April 6 at the Hillsborough County Superior Courthouse in Manchester.
The 1-2 finish was a triumphant return for Milford, a perennial contender for the state title – Milford teams have finished in second place for the past three years.
Amherst Middle School emerged as the middle school champion in the competition, the 16th conducted by the Bar Association.
Milford teams #1 and #2 were coached by Todd Prevett, an Amherst attorney who participated as a high school senior on Milford’s state championship team in 1990-91. He was assisted by teacher David Alcox.
On behalf of the NH Bar Foundation, Martha Van Oot, NHBA president-elect and a member of the NHBF Board, presented the Milford team with $1,000 toward expenses for the national competition. In addition to now preparing for the competition, the students must also raise travel funds to compete at the nationals, held May 10-12 in St. Paul, Minn. The team must tackle an entirely different case in the national finals, facing competitors from much larger states who have experienced much more competition before making it to the finals, said Prevett, but he expressed confidence in the abilities of his team.
Eight secondary school teams participated in the state finals, having survived the preliminary round of competition, which featured 30 teams and about 300 students.
In addition to the Milford teams, the other high school finalists were Nashua and Souhegan. In the finals, Amherst Middle School faced teams from Mastricola (Merrimack), McKelvie (Bedford) and Milford.
