In Memoriam - Garfield H. Miller
GARFIELD H. MILLER, a NH and Vermont Bar member, died recently at the age of 55 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Miller was a founding partner of the Norwich, Vermont law firm of Miller & Candon, where he practiced from 1980 until his death. He passed away on Dec. 30, 2001, but Bar News only recently learned of his death.
Miller was born July 29, 1946, in Hanover, NH, the son of William H. and Sheila (McManus) Miller. He graduated from Cardigan Mountain School and Hotchkiss School, then served two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he received the Purple Heart.
He earned a degree in three years at Columbia University and graduated cum laude in 1973 from Boston University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review. In 1981, he earned an LLM in taxation from BU Law.
After serving as law clerk to Chief Judge James S. Holden of U.S. District Court in Vermont, Miller worked at the White River Junction, Vermont, law office of Black & Plante until starting his own firm in 1980.
Miller was a member of a number of community organizations, including the Dresden School Board, which he chaired from 1988 to 1990; the DHMC Assembly of Overseers; and the board of Lake Mitchell Trout Club, for which he served as secretary. He was also a director of Hanover Hockey Association, trustee of Norwich Library, moderator of Norwich Fire District, and a trustee of the Gov. Lane Dwinell Foundation.
Miller was predeceased by his mother, a son, Christopher J. Miller, and his stepmother, Kathryn C. Miller. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Dianne C. Miller; four sons, Garfield H. III, William B., Andrew C. and Peter J. Miller, all of Norwich; his father, of Hanover; a brother, Justin K. Miller of Philadelphia; a step-brother, Cameron Eldred of Hanover; a step-sister, Jane Eldred of New York; and several nieces, nephews and godchildren.
