Robert Battles died recently at his Madbury home; he was 58.
Born in Exeter, NH, he lived in Kingston, NH, and graduated from Exeter Area High School, before attending and graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in music theory and composition. He spent the 20 years following his graduation presiding over N.T. Battles and Sons, a liquor distribution company.
He later returned to school, attending the Massachusetts School of Law in Andover, where he received his law degree. He was admitted to practice in Massachusetts in 1995 and joined the New Hampshire Bar in 1996.
Battles joined Donohue, Tucker & Ciandella in Portsmouth, where he practiced general civil litigation and divorce law. He also spent much of his time handling cases pro bono.
Active in his community, Battles served as a member of the NH Trial Lawyers Association, the Portsmouth Rotary Club, the Great Bay Yacht Club and St. George’s Episcopal Church in Durham.
Battles had many hobbies as well, including sailing, gardening and playing the violin. He was a member of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; three sons, Scott, Michael and Christian; daughter, Abigal; and two grandchildren, Ethan and Kiera.
