‘Goodbye to Judges’ Night at Manchester Bar
On April 20, the Manchester Bar Association presented its Annual Lawyer of the Year award to retired Probate Court Judge Raymond A. Cloutier. Probate Court Administrative Judge David King, a longtime colleague of Cloutier’s recalled that Cloutier was reluctant to become a full-time judge and rebuffed attempts to convert his position to full-time for several years because he enjoyed the practice of law. The meeting, held at the Bedford Village Inn, had a crowded agenda, as the Association also sought to recognize several judges from the state and the federal court who all are retiring this spring or summer.
Chief Justice Broderick lauded the service of four members of the Superior Court who all have announced their retirements: Associate Justices James Barry, William Groff, Philip Mangones, and Kathleen McGuire. Also US Magistrate Judge James Muirhead was recognized for his service and efforts to improve advocacy in the federal court.

Judge Muirhead was introduced by former law firm colleague Jack Middleton, who said Muirhead commanded respect. "God help the lawyer who shows up in his court and isn’t prepared." Several attorneys lauded Muirhead’s efforts to streamline cases and fight abuse of the discovery process. |
