Legislature Cuts & Adds Expenses
The Legislature on June 10 approved measures to close a $295 million budget gap that included an additional $1 million cut in the judicial branch budget. The measure also requires the judicial branch to absorb $1.2 million in added costs to fund a previously-agreed increase in per-diem payments for court security officers and sheriff’s officers.
The Chief Justice last week also sent a letter to Gov. Lynch requesting that he defer all judicial appointments for the current fiscal year to provide budget flexibility for the courts. There are 11 full-time judicial vacancies at all court levels.
The next unpaid furlough date will be July 2.
