President's Awards Celebrate the Best of the Bar
THE ANNUAL MEETING will provide a welcome opportunity for the legal community to recognize those among its ranks who serve as models of professionalism and dedication.
This year's awards will be presented at the NHBA Annual Meeting Banquet on Friday, June 21, 2002 at the Portsmouth Sheraton Harborside Hotel. The agenda for the dinner also includes the annual recognition of Bar members accorded honorary status for 50 years of active service in the legal profession and recognition of the members of the judiciary who have retired or have been appointed in the past year. (See accompanying lists, below.) The evening closes with the passing of the gavel to the next NHBA president. This year, 2001-2002 President Peter E. Hutchins will hand off the Association presidency to Martha Van Oot, who will serve until June 2003.
The awards to be presented and this year's recipients are:
Distinguished Service to the Legal Profession: Bruce W. Felmly
A trial lawyer at the McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton law firm and the 1995-96 NHBA president, Felmly has long been active in Bar Association leadership roles. "I wanted to recognize Bruce for his years of tireless dedication to the Bar, often taking on the most difficult tasks and issues in any given year," said Hutchins. "This year, I needed a new chair of the Committee on Cooperation with the Courts, and despite his busy practice, he took on the task and has done a top-rate job in a year during which we have seen bench/bar relations improve dramatically."
E. Donald Dufresne Award for Outstanding Professionalism: Dort S. Bigg
Bigg, a living legend of the NH Bar, maintains a trial practice at Wiggin & Nourie. "Dort was my first and primary mentor from 1983 to 1998 when I joined my new firm," said Hutchins. "I was always impressed with the sensitivity and caring with which he treated everyone he came in contact with, from clients to fellow attorneys, opposing counsel and judges. The lessons I have learned about professionalism over the years, in addition to lessons on how to be a plaintiff's lawyer, I learned from Dort."
Justice William A. Grimes Award for Judicial Professionalism: The Justices of the NH Supreme Court
This year's award will be presented to all five members of the NH Supreme Court: Chief Justice David A. Brock and Associate Justices John T. Broderick, Jr., Joseph P. Nadeau, Linda S. Dalianis and James E. Duggan.
"I am presenting the Grimes Award to the members of the Supreme Court for the way in which they have pulled together since the unpleasantness of the impeachment hearings and subsequent legislative criticism," Hutchins explained.
"Rather than retreat and hide, the court was proactive in dramatically decreasing its backlog, making significant improvements to the administration of appellate matters, participating in a constructive manner in the legislative debate, and importantly reaching out to the Bar Association in a clear effort to repair any damage that may have been done to bench/bar relations. Excellence in the face of adversity is a benchmark of a true professional."
