Lawyers, Judges Educating Young Minds About Our Legal System
TWO RECENT PROGRAMS sent New Hampshire's lawyers and judges on the road to educate students about the state's system of justice.
The NH Bar's "A Lawyer and Judge in Every School" program, coordinated by the Bar's Law-Related Education program, brings lawyers and judges to elementary and secondary schools across the state to teach students about the law, the court system and what it's like to be a lawyer. The attorneys often use lessons that apply to the students and their everyday lives - such as discussing a principal's right to search a student's locker. Most of the school visits took place on May 3. Attorney Ann Larney of the NH Attorney General's Office discussed search and seizure issues related to the Fourth Amendment with fifth-graders at Bicentennial Elementary School in Nashua.
Also, on May 1, the NH Supreme Court heard two oral arguments on actual cases during an "on the road" session at St. Anselm College before an audience that included more than 450 high school and college students. Four NH Supreme Court Justices heard arguments during the session. See page 24 for details on this public outreach project, which the court plans to make an ongoing program.
