In Memoriam: Donald E. Gartrell
Donald E. Gartrell passed away in Bar Harbor, Maine recently at the age of 70.
Gartrell graduated from Arlington High School in Poughkeepsie, NY, in 1958 and went on to Ohio Wesleyan University, receiving his degree in Economics. He received his JD from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1965 then served as a Captain in the US Air Force at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine.
He began his legal career as an associate with Sulloway, Hollis, Godfrey and Soden of Concord in 1969. Five years later, he formed Gallagher, Callahan & Gartrell with colleagues, Michael Callahan and Christopher Gallagher. The firm has been operating for 35 years.
Gartrell was active in his community where he provided legal counsel to his town of Warner and served as Town Moderator for 26 years. He supported the Boy Scouts of America and served on the boards of the NH Historical Society, the Concord Hospital and NH Chapter of the Red Cross. He was also a trustee of Gould Academy.
He is survived by his wife Sarah Burgess Gartrell; his daughter, Molly Gartrell Earle; son, Bryce Gartrell; in addition to his four grandsons, Sam, Asa, Adrian and Nigel.
In honor of our colleague Donald E. Gartrell, the NH Bar Association Board of Governors has made a donation to the NH Bar Foundation, 2 Pillsbury Street, Concord, NH 03301.
