Bush Appoints Dover Attorney to Federal Labor Appeals Board
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH recently appointed Dover attorney Alec J. Koromilas to the Employees Compensation Appeals Board (ECAB), an adjudicatory body attached to the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Labor.
ECAB members hear and decide appeals of federal employees who may become ill or injured as a result of their federal employment. The board serves approximately three million federal employees and awards in excess of $1.8 billion in benefits annually. Koromilas began his two-year term on the three-member ECAB Jan. 28.
In his new role, Koromilas oversees a staff of about 60 attorneys and hears appeals from around the country. The appeals board adjudicates an estimated 1,500 cases a year, including suits related to people killed in the course of federal employment, involved in top-secret matters or who have developed mental-stress injuries.
In announcing the appointment of Koromilas, and of Colleen Duffy Kido of Virginia, U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao said, "These individuals bring a wealth of experience in workers’ compensation, employment law and labor relations to this important board. They will help ECAB achieve its core mission, which is ensuring that federal employees get a fair and timely response to their appeals."
Koromilas said that he looks forward to the challenges of his new job. "There’s no question about it, there’s an extraordinary challenge and case load," he said.
Although now working in Washington, D.C., Koromilas will maintain his Dover law office, Koromilas & Koromilas, which was formed when he joined his father, the late James Koromilas, in his practice. In private practice, Alec Koromilas specialized in tort and workers’ compensation litigation.
Koromilas served as chair of the NH Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board from 1993 to 1998. According to a press release announcing his appointment to the ECAB, "Under his leadership, the (NH Workers’ Compensation Appeals) board streamlined its appeals procedures and expedited the processing of workers’ compensation claims."
Koromilas, 37, received a B.A. in political science from Boston University and his J.D. from Franklin Pierce Law Center. He was admitted to the NH Bar in 1992 and is also a member of the Maine Bar. He served in the NH House of Representatives from 1986 to 1988, and in 2000, he was NH director for Elizabeth Dole’s presidential campaign. After Dole left the race, he joined President Bush’s campaign team.
