LARC’s Connie Rakowsky to Receive Ricker Award

The NH Women’s Bar Association (NHWBA) will present the 2012
Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award to Connie L. Rakowsky. She is executive
director of the Legal Advice and Referral Center (LARC), a private, non-profit law
firm that provides free legal services to eligible, low-income individuals in New
Hampshire.
The award is named in honor of Marilla M. Ricker, who in 1890 became the first
woman to apply for admission to the New Hampshire Bar. It is presented to an
outstanding woman lawyer in NH who has achieved professional excellence or paved
the way to success for other women lawyers, advanced opportunities for women in
the profession, or performed exemplary public service on behalf of women.
The award will be presented at the NHWBA’s 15th Annual Fall Reception on Thursday,
Sept. 27, 2012, at the Concord Country Club in East Concord from 5:30 to 7:30
p.m.
Rakowsky began her legal career in 1981 with Orr & Reno., where she earned a
strong reputation for handling complex multi-party bankruptcy cases for commercial
and business clients at a time when few women were focusing on these cases. Later
in her career, she gained extensive training and experience in mediation, and
solving problems for business clients and non-profits.
Rakowsky has a long history of involvement in community service, serving as a
board member and president of NH Legal Assistance, and as a director for the New
Hampshire Women’s Initiative, a consolidated entity comprised of the former NH
Women’s Policy Institute, the NH Commission on the Status of Women, and the NH
Women’s Lobby and Alliance. Attorney Rakowsky also served on the New Hampshire Bar
Association’s Committee on Women in the Profession (which later transitioned into
the Gender Equality Committee) and has participated in the Pro Bono Referral
Program’s phone-a-thons.
At the reception, the NHWBA will also present the Winnie McLaughlin Scholarship to
Jessica Allsop, a second-year law student of the UNH School of Law.
The Fall Reception is open to all members of the New Hampshire Bar Association. No
RSVP required, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be provided.

Recipients of the NH Women’s Bar Association’s Marilla Ricker Award gathered for a reception last month to raise awareness and funds for Campaign for Legal Services. Donate to the campaign at www.nh-cls.org.
