In Memoriam - Mark M. Rumley
In Memoriam

MARK M. RUMLEY, a Londonderry defense attorney, died Aug. 5, 2002, in Hopkinton at the age of 39. He was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rumley was born Jan. 26, 1963, in Haddonfield, NJ, the son of Charles J. and Patricia R. Rumley. He was raised in Haddonfield and graduated from Rutgers University in 1985, receiving his bachelor's degree in history. He attended John Marshall Law School in Chicago and earned his law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1989. He was admitted to the NH Bar the same year and practiced law at the Law Office of Mark Rumley in Londonderry.

Rumley lived in Bedford with his wife and five children before the family moved to Sunapee two years ago.

In a Union Leader article, Rick Monteith, an attorney who shared office space with Rumley for the past 10 years, described Rumley as "generous to a fault."

"He was the type who would represent someone who didn't have any money pro bono because he felt everyone was entitled to an attorney. He didn't ever do it for recognition, but it seems he was always representing someone for free. He had a great big heart," said Monteith.

Londonderry Police Capt. Bill Hart, who as police prosecutor in the early 1990s regularly faced Rumley in the courtroom, said Rumley was above all a gentleman - and a friend. "As he did with every prosecutor and police officer, Mark quickly showed himself to be a person who was always reasonable to deal with," Hart said. "He was always ready with a story or a laugh...Like many in the law enforcement community, I considered Mark to be a friend."

Hart said that Rumley often spoke about his family, which was "the most important thing to him."

At press time, Hopkinton Police and the Merrimack County Sheriff's office were investigating Rumley's death and an autopsy was scheduled.

Rumley's funeral was held in Manchester and burial followed in the Old Main Street Cemetery in New London.

Rumley's survivors include his wife of 14 years, Julie Lynn Ranger Rumley of Sunapee; five children, Bridget, Garrick, Phelan, Marian and Anna; his father, Charles, of Haddonfield, NJ; four sisters, Cheryl A. Rumley of North Brookfield, Mass., Patrice M. Stavely of Collingswood, NJ, Siobahn S. Wright of Barnard, Vt., and Maureen (Bean) Corcoran of Weston, Conn.; and three brothers, Paul E. Rumley, Brian A. Rumley and Kurt C. Rumley, all of Haddonfield, NJ.

In memory of our colleague Mark M. Rumley, the New Hampshire Bar Association's Board of Governors has contributed to the New Hampshire Bar Foundation, 112 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301.
