Pierce Law Launches Student Research Service to Assist Bar Members
The Career Development Office of Franklin Pierce Law Center has created a student research service to connect students to licensed attorneys needing research assistance. The goal of the service is to facilitate single project, short-term student assistance for attorneys who don’t want to employ a permanent law clerk or who, due to geographic constraints, are unable to employ permanent student clerks. The Career Development Office communicates research requests to qualifying students who have registered to participate. Students contact the attorney directly and details of the research request are provided when the student accepts an assignment.
The Career Development Office does not match a particular student to a specific research request. The attorney can request resumes and writing samples from students responding to the research request, if desired. All students are apprised of the confidential nature of requests and no identifying details of cases are posted when notifying students of requests. Once a student accepts an assignment, further communication is between attorney and student. The office does not supervise researchers or oversee their work, but does seek feedback from attorneys regarding quality, reliability and timeliness of student performance.
The Career Development Office does not set or collect reimbursement for student services. We suggest a range of $15 to $20 per hour, but it is up to the attorney and student to agree upon compensation.
How to Request Assistance
To obtain assistance from the student research service, contact the Career Development Office by e-mail, fax or telephone. Written requests are preferred. Please include the following information in your request:
- Brief background information and subject of the request.
- Name, address and telephone and fax numbers of the attorney requesting research.
- Deadline for initial contact.
- Deadline for completion of the project.
- Compensation offered.
- The names of opposing counsel, if any. This information will be used to assist students in identifying potential conflicts because of former employment.
