Trial Lawyers Association Presents Awards, Names New Officers
Trial Lawyers Association Presents Awards Names New Officers

THE NEW HAMPSHIRE Trial Lawyers Association (NHTLA) honored a number of attorneys and others at its Annual Meeting and dinner held in Bedford in June.

Rep. John M. "Jack" Pratt of Walpole was the recipient of the NHTLA’s Civil Justice Award. The award "recognizes both commitment to the administration of justice for the public good and efforts to assure individuals a full, fair and timely remedy for wrongs they have suffered." Rep. Pratt, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, took an active role in the Legislature over the past year to successfully advocate for an attorney-conducted voir dire program, according to the NHTLA. The two-year pilot voir dire program is currently underway in Cheshire and Rockingham counties. It gives attorneys the opportunity to question potential jurors to identify any bias. (See page 1 for a feature article on the program.)

The NHTLA named attorney David M. Gottesman of the Nashua law firm Gottesman & Hollis this year’s recipient of its President’s Award. NHTLA President Nicholas D. Brown of Hall, Hess, Stewart, Murphy & Brown in Manchester presented the award to Gottesman. The President’s Award is given annually to the individual who, in the opinion of the president, "has been of outstanding service to the association and of particular help to the president during the preceding year."

Attorney Roger B. Phillips was the recipient of the annual Board of Governors Award for his "outstanding dedication and service to NHTLA." The award is presented annually to an NHTLA member who has "demonstrated exemplary support of the Association and its goals over an extended period of time." Phillips was the first recipient of the award when it was established in 1989. He served as president of NHTLA from 1986-87.

The NHTLA also announced its newly elected officers for 2002-03. Kimberly Kirkland of Franklin Pierce Law Center has been named president of the Association, succeeding Nick Brown; Paul A. Maggiotto of the Law Offices of Paul A. Maggiotto in Concord is president-elect for 2002-03; Timothy C. Coughlin of Coughlin, Rainboth, Murphy & Lown in Portsmouth will serve as treasurer; and Thomas E. Craig of Craig Law Offices in Manchester will be secretary.
