ROCKINGHAM COUNTY SUPERIOR Court Judge Philip S. Hollman, who was appointed to the trial court bench by former Gov. John H. Sununu, has announced he intends to retire on Dec. 7, 2002, after 17 years of service to the court. As a senior retired judge, Hollman plans to continue to hear cases periodically, sitting in February and March 2003 in Rockingham County.

In a letter to Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, Hollman said it has been "a great honor and privilege for me to have served the people of New Hampshire as a judge." He described his colleagues on the court as "an outstanding group of judges - people who take enormous pride in their work, who are tremendously conscientious about performing the duties of their office fairly, justly and impartially, and who strive to do what is legally and morally right for the litigants they attend."

"I very much thank you and the people of New Hampshire for allowing me to have been of service in a very meaningful and fulfilling public service career," said Judge Hollman in his letter. Hollman will be 65 next month.

NH Superior Court Chief Justice Walter L. Murphy said Judge Hollman had been a "significant asset to the court."

"We look forward to continuing our relationship with Judge Hollman in the future as a senior retired judge and will miss his service to the many administrative tasks he took on in the past," Murphy said.

A graduate of Brown University and the University of Michigan Law School, Judge Hollman practiced law briefly in New Hampshire in the early 1960s before joining the Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps, assigned to Loring Air Force Base, Maine. He returned to private law practice in Manchester in 1966 and was appointed to the Superior Court by Gov. Sununu on May 1, 1985. In 1994, Judge Hollman was honored by the NH Bar Association with its annual award for "Outstanding Professionalism."

Judge Hollman was appointed the first supervisory justice of the marital masters in 1994, devoting his talents to improving services provided by the Superior Court to people engaged in family litigation until 1996. He represented the Superior Court on the Judicial Council and served on the New Hampshire Certified Mediation Board.

During his tenure on the bench, Judge Hollman also made significant contributions to the discussion of key issues involving the legal profession. He was one of the first members of the NH Bar's "Gender Equality Committee" when it was established 14 years ago and he served as president of the first chapter of the American Inns of Court in New Hampshire, known as the Daniel Webster chapter. The American Inns of Court is a national organization of judges and lawyers that focuses on professionalism, legal skills and ethics.
