Bar's LRE Program to Coordinate National Voter Turnout Program
Bars LRE Program to Coordinate National Voter Turnout Program
The Bar Association's Law-Related Education program has been granted funding to serve as the New Hampshire coordinator for the national voter turnout drive, Freedom's Answer. The program will be featured in the Sept. 8 issue of PARADE magazine.
Freedom's Answer is a bipartisan, national project that seeks to produce the largest voter turnout in an off-year election in our nation's history. It was featured recently in PARADE Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, and other major news media.
According to organizers, Americans are being called upon to show the importance of freedom and the importance of civic education by voting. The movement is strictly non-partisan and is supported by the Democrat and Republican Parties as well as the American Bar Association, League of Women Voters, National Association of Secondary School Principals and many other groups.
Melissa Childs, the Bar's Law-Related Education coordinator, will lead organizational efforts in NH, utilizing the Bar's contacts with schools throughout the state to provide information about Freedom's Answer, particularly the "Youth Voter Corps" a program designed to engage high school students in the electoral process.
Students and school groups will be directed to the freedomsanswer.net web site to find tools and suggestions for recruiting all voting-age adults in New Hampshire to vote to honor America's armed forces that are risking their lives for freedom, with the goal of producing the largest voter turnout in a non-presidential year.
"November 2002 will be the first nationwide election since the terrorist attacks. And it will be the first and best chance to honor our soldiers, and to turn out a record vote to show the world that America is alive and well," said Childs.
Freedom's Answer and the Youth Voter Corps are non-partisan. Participants in the program will not ask anyone to register for a particular party or vote for a specific candidate. The goal is to motivate people to exercise the right to vote.
The Bar's Law-Related Education program also sponsors programs such as the "We the People" constitutional law contest, Mock Trial, and "A Lawyer and Judge in Every School." These programs are designed to enhance young citizens' knowledge of their government and legal system, and facilitate the voluntarism of Bar members in educational activities.
The daily coordination and management of Freedom's Answer is through a non-partisan, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization called Youth-e-Vote, Inc. Co-founders are Doug Bailey, a former publisher and Republican political consultant, and Mike McCurry, former press secretary to President Bill Clinton.
