On the Road Again...
THE NH SUPREME COURT continued its "on the road" public outreach effort with a special session held at Dover High School Oct. 2. The court heard oral arguments in two cases, State of NH v. Jeffrey Grey, which involved implied consent and Miranda rights, and Petition of WMUR Channel 9 & a., which asked to establish a rule allowing cameras and electronic recording devices to be allowed in the courtroom. The cameras in the court case stemmed from a petition by various media outlets to lift a trial judge's blanket ban on still photography and video and audio recording during the trial of Robert Tulloch, one of two teens accused of murdering Dartmouth professors Half and Susanne Zantop in January 2001.
Nearly 500 students from over a dozen Seacoast area high schools attended the special session. Following the oral arguments in the two cases, students had an opportunity to question both the attorneys involved in the cases and later the Supreme Court justices. The justices fielded questions on such issues as the challenges and rewards of their job, the workings of the court and their judicial philosophies during the question-and-answer session.
