Only Two Contests Among County Attorney Races
Only Two Contests Among County Attorney Races
ALL BUT TWO of the races for county attorney this year are uncontested. In the other eight counties, incumbents (and one newcomer) appear on both ballots.
Vying to fill the office vacated by longtime Merrimack County Attorney Michael Johnson is Dan St. Hilaire, who won a three-candidate Republican primary, and Democrat Peter Odom, a Bow resident who currently serves as chief prosecutor in the Strafford County Attorney's Office. St. Hilaire currently serves as assistant city prosecutor in Concord. The winner of the election will replace Howard Helrich, Johnson's deputy, who earlier this year was appointed by the NH Superior Court to fill the unexpired term of Johnson. Johnson left the post to serve as a prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
In Hillsborough County, longtime incumbent Peter McDonough, a Democrat, faces a challenge from Mont Vernon attorney John Coughlin, a Republican.
In Grafton County, Rick St. Hilaire is unopposed in his bid to replace outgoing County Attorney Kenneth Anderson, who did not seek re-election. St. Hilaire, the younger brother of Merrimack County Attorney candidate Dan St. Hilaire, is assistant Belknap County Attorney and is the former Plymouth area prosecutor.
Elsewhere in the state, the following county attorneys are unopposed in their bids for re-election:
Belknap: Lauren J. Noether
Carroll: Robin J. Gordon
Cheshire: Peter W. Heed
Coos: Pierre J. Morin
Rockingham: James M. Reams
Strafford: Janice K. Rundles
Sullivan: Marc Hathaway
