Employment of Law Grads Down
Market remains strong
THE LATEST EDITION of the National Association for Law Placement's "Jobs & JDs: Employment and Salaries of New Law Graduates" reported the first decrease in the employment rate of new law graduates since 1993, although employment of law grads remains strong.
The 28th consecutive "Jobs & JDs" study showed an employment rate of 90 percent for reported 2001 law school graduates, which was down from 91.5 percent the previous year. NALP said that the decrease "is evidence of the effect of the general economic downturn on the employment market for new law school graduates."
Despite the decrease, the study reported, the employment rate for new law school graduates has remained relatively strong in recent years, at or above 90 percent. This is a marked improvement over the early- and mid-'90s, when the employment rate for law grads was in the range of 84 to 85 percent.
A total of 174 ABA-accredited law schools responded to the survey, providing employment information on 91 percent of all graduates of the class of 2001.
