Professionalism, Ethics Resources from ABA
YOU DON’T HAVE to be a member of the ABA to use its ETHICSearch service or to browse through the articles and reports at the Center for Professional Responsibility at www.abanet.org/cpr/home.html.
The ETHICSearch service, usually on the same day of an inquiry, provides at no charge an initial search of ABA ethics rules, opinions by the ABA and various state and local bar ethics committees, as well as law review articles and treatises. Inquirers receive citations to the authorities needed to understand the issues and hopefully resolve the problem.
There’s no charge for an initial consultation, or if the ETHICSearch lawyer can answer your question immediately. If you decide to ask for additional research, you’ll be charged an hourly rate of $60, discounted to $45 for ABA members. You can fax your inquiry to 312/988-5491 or via e-mail it to ethicsearch@staff.abanet.org.
Also at the ABA/CPR site are recent reports of the Ethics 2000 revisions to the Model Code of Professional Conduct, the Task Force on the Model Definition of the Practice of Law, and the Commission on Multijurisdictional Practice.
Also, visitors can find recent opinions and guidance regarding lawyer advertising and promotion and an ABA Formal Ethics Opinion, issued in Aug. 2002, addressing the issue of "Drafting Will on Recommendation of Potential Beneficiary Who Also is Client."
