ANLIR in Receivership
AMERICAN NATIONAL LAWYERS Insurance Reciprocal (ANLIR) policyholders have been informed that the insurance carrier is under receivership in Tennessee, where it is domiciled, because of financial questions regarding its primary reinsurer, Reciprocal of America.
Reciprocal of America is operating under a "voluntary order of rehabilitation" with the Virginia Bureau of Insurance, which placed a moratorium on payment by ANLIR on claims for lawyer liability policies until a financial review is completed. A.M. Best, the national insurance rating organization, recently downgraded ANLIR's financial condition to "D (Poor)."
Virginia Lawyers Weekly has been regularly covering the ANLIR situation and has the most up-to-date coverage. It recently reported that ANLIR policyholders may be held personally liable for claims if the insurer is unable to pay them. More information can be found on the Virginia Lawyers Weekly Web site at www.virginialaw.com.
Links to other relevant documents and information about ways to find alternative coverage can be found at the NHBA Insurance Agency, Inc. page, or contact Suzanne Morand directly at smorand@nhbar.org for assistance in obtaining professional liability insurance. Morand, an experienced and licensed insurance professional, maintains relationships with several insurance carriers doing business in New Hampshire.
The New Hampshire Bar Association's endorsement agreement with ANLIR ended July 1, 2002.
