NH's Legal Tech Gurus Offer Practical Tips

DAN COOLIDGE AND Bruce Dorner have been presenting "60 Hot Tech Tips in 60 Minutes" at CLE programs in New Hampshire and nationally for several years. Their most recent version at the NHBA Midyear Meeting on Jan. 24 is akin to a Siskel & Ebert dialogue on the latest in legal gadgets and software.

Coolidge and Dorner's advice about law office technology is crisp and brief - like Henny Youngman's one-liners, if you don't get it, don't worry, they are soon on to the next tip. Their advice is especially geared to the small-firm or solo lawyer.

Here's a sampling:

  • Computer hardware is becoming a commodity. Shop for bargains on Web sites such as shopper.com. Consider buying factory refurbished machines - often the warranties are better than those on new equipment.
  • Don't send interrogatories on paper, if you can avoid it. Putting them in PDF format makes them tamper-proof. Send them via e-mail or on disk.
  • Microsoft Word users - Do you miss the "reveal code" function of Word Perfect? A software product called CrossEyes provides a "reveal code" type of function for MS Word so you can remove pesky formatting and spacing that you can't see.
  • Tired of trips to the post office? Visit stamps.com. For a 10 percent fee (and if you have your own postage scale) you can get the correct postage without the fuss of a meter, placed on labels your computer printer can spit out.
  • Discovery tool. Need old Web pages? Visit archive.org, which archives many Web pages.

Contact the NHBA CLE Department's department to order the videotape of "60 Hot Tech Tips in 60 Minutes" before the advice goes out of date!
