New Jaffrey-Peterborough District Court Opens
The new $2.6 million Jaffrey-Peterborough District Court has finally opened – nearly a year after its scheduled opening. A fire destroyed the nearly completed new courthouse one year ago and the facility had to be rebuilt.
The new three-story, 21,000-square-foot facility in Monadnock Plaza on Route 202 has space for three courtrooms, offices for prosecutors and other staff, jury deliberation space, holding cells, conference rooms and records storage. The court’s security, phone and computer systems have also been updated.
Jaffrey-Peterborough District Court was formerly located in a one-story concrete structure that once housed a ball bearings factory. The facility was woefully inadequate; a former cafeteria served as the courtroom, and because the walls didn’t go up to the ceiling, noise was a problem in both the courtroom and the court offices. The court moved into the ex-ball bearing factory in 1987 for what was supposed to be a year or so, but ended up staying for 15 years.
The court staff was set to move into its new building last May, but a spark from a plumber’s torch caused a fire on Feb. 28, 2002 that destroyed the nearly completed facility.
Business is being conducted in the new facility, and a formal dedication ceremony will take place later this month.
