Patricia Flynn Appointed Mass. Judge

PATRICIA A. FLYNN, a solo practitioner with offices in Salem, NH and Lawrence, Mass., was sworn in as associate justice of the Middlesex County Juvenile Court for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on Jan. 1. She closed her Salem general law practice, which she maintained since 1983, upon her appointment.

Flynn is a 1981 graduate of Suffolk University Law School. She was admitted to the Mass. Bar in 1981 and the NH Bar in 1982. Prior to her law career, she was a probation officer in Lawrence (Mass.) District Court.

Flynn has participated in the NHBA's Pro Bono Referral Program and has represented indigent clients in New Hampshire and Massachusetts in domestic relations, criminal and juvenile matters. She is currently president-elect of the Greater Lawrence Bar Association.

"I look forward to serving the children and families appearing before me and recognize the awesome responsibility such service entails," Flynn said of her judgeship. "The many years I spent representing the New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth and Families in the prosecution of abuse and neglect cases certainly helped to prepare me for the position," she said.

Flynn was active in the NH Pro Bono program off and on throughout her career. She said that her volunteer efforts, particularly taking pro bono cases in New Hampshire and acting as a volunteer guardian for indigent citizens in Mass., were positive factors in her confirmation as a judge. "You don't realize how much volunteer services play a role in nominations like this. Volunteer efforts are looked upon very favorably when applying for a judgeship," she said.

Aside from the influence her volunteer efforts had on her confirmation, Flynn thinks pro bono service is a moral obligation for attorneys. "It's part of our service to the community. I think it's important that lawyers, no matter how busy, accept pro bono cases."
