In Memoriam - Jones, Hamblett

Robert Andros Jones

Robert Andros Jones, 87, of Lebanon, died on March 21, 2003, at the Del Ray Medical Center, Del Ray Beach, Florida. A prominent Lebanon attorney who practiced until he retired in the early 1990s, he was a Grafton County Probate Judge from 1958 to 1982. Two children survive Jones, attorney Deborah J. Cooper, of Lebanon, and David A. Jones, of Marlborough, CT.

Jones was born in Lebanon on Sept. 13, 1915, the son of Fred A. and Mary (Bennett) Jones. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School and was cofounder of the Lebanon Alumni Association and served as a president of the group. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1938 and received a law degree from Boston University Law School in 1941, and was admitted to the NH Bar that year. He served in the US Navy during World War II and was discharged as a lieutenant senior grade.

He married Virginia Elliott on Feb. 12, 1949, and they made their home in Lebanon until her death on Sept. 28, 1988.

Jones was a prominent member of the Upper Valley legal community and was active in public life, serving as Grafton County Attorney from 1947 until 1953, as Grafton County commissioner from 1953 until 1957, and as secretary of the Lebanon Planning Board from 1950 until 1962. He was also moderator for the Lebanon Fire Precinct and chaired the Lebanon Republican Committee. Other groups in which he participated or held leadership roles included the Grafton County Bar Association, the Lebanon Improvement Society, Lebanon Industrial Development Association, and the NH County Officers Association.

He served as attorney for the town and city of Lebanon and for the Lebanon School District.

He was a founding member of the Big Jim Marching Chowder Society and served as president o the Lebanon Outing Club and the Carter Country Club. He loved his family, playing cribbage and was an avid golfer who was fortunate enough to have shot seven holes-in-one over his lifetime. He was a loyal Dartmouth football fan and alumnus. His family remembers him as always being a champion for the underdog in a quiet way.

In addition to his two children, four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews survive him. A son, Douglas A. Jones, preceded him in death in 1992.

A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church, Lebanon, with burial at Glenwood Cemetery in Lebanon.

The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to the Dollars for Scholars, c/o Raymond Plante, 15 Dana Street, West Lebanon, NH 03784. To leave a note of condolence or to sign an online guest book, go to www.rickerfuneralhome.com.
