On May 2, Educate Young Minds About Our Legal System

By:

TALKING ABOUT WHAT you do for a living with a group of students – how’s that for a change of pace? Did you ever have the desire to lead a discussion about our legal system? Do you have some courtroom anecdotes you’d like to share with a group of students? Would you like to impart to others some of the lessons you have learned as a lawyer? Do you just enjoy talking with kids? If any of these strikes a chord with you, please set aside Friday, May 2 to spend some time speaking to students about our legal system and the practice of law during this year’s Lawyer and Judge in Every School Day.

The Lawyer and Judge in Every School Committee of the NH Bar Association hopes to improve on last year’s official turnout of approximately 75 lawyers. With roughly 3,500 members of the NH Bar, we think the turnout can – and should – be much higher.

By taking a few hours out of your day on May 2, you could have a positive impact on some of our state’s youth, helping them to understand how our government and our legal system work here in New Hampshire. You could spark an interest that could lead to further inquiry, involvement or understanding. You could provide an important "real world" supplement to a child’s educational experience. You could even be the inspiration for a career in the law or government.

The Bar Association doesn’t dictate what lesson plan or format a lawyer will use in the classroom; rather, it serves as a resource for information to make it easier for attorneys to participate in the Lawyer/Judge in Every School program and to enhance the experience for the students. The program is flexible enough to accommodate all teaching styles and comfort levels.

Attorneys can also choose what grade level they’d prefer to work with, from K through 12. Each participating lawyer is put in touch with a school or with a specific teacher to develop a presentation that is age-appropriate, educational and interesting. The Lawyer and Judge in Every School Committee is working with Bar Association staff to provide information, including lesson plans for those who want them, to all interested lawyers to help them participate in this unique educational experience. These plans will be available on the Bar’s Web site, under For the Public/Law-Related Education/A Lawyer & Judge in Every School, or in hard copy by contacting LRE coordinator Melissa Childs at the Bar Center, 224-6942, or by e-mailing her at mchilds@nhbar.org.

Use the form below to show your interest in participating in the program.
