Milford, Amherst are 2003 Mock Trial Champions

MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL emerged the winner of the high school round and Amherst Middle School is the middle school champion of this year’s NH Bar Association Mock Trial Competition. Preliminary rounds of the competition were held at courthouses across the state March 14-26 with state finals held March 29 at Hillsborough County Superior Court-North in Manchester. A total of 30 teams competed in the 17th annual Mock Trial competition.

Milford outscored finalists Pembroke Academy (the runner-up with a very strong performance), Pinkerton Academy and Sunapee High School to take the state Mock Trial championship. Milford will now go on to the national competition in New Orleans in May. In addition to preparing for the stiff competition, the students must also raise travel funds to compete at nationals. They are bolstered by a $1,000 contribution from the NH Bar Foundation that was presented at the finals by attorney Susannah Colt.

In the middle school competition, Amherst defeated finalists Lyme, McKelvie and Milford (the runner-up) to take the state title.

The Mock Trial competition, sponsored by the NHBA and the NH Bar Foundation, annually involves hundreds of students from several dozen schools statewide. Students from middle school through high school form teams that spend several months preparing to argue both sides of a controversial court case.

Students participating in Mock Trial are supervised by teachers and volunteer lawyer coaches as they research facts to develop both sides of the case, then prepare for trial, with the students playing the roles of attorneys, plaintiffs and witnesses. By participating in Mock Trial, students learn about constitutional and legal issues, courtroom procedure, public speaking and teamwork as they undergo the demanding task of preparing for trial and presenting a case. This year’s case involved the constitutionality of a school policy against dancing on school premises.

Contributions to help defray the travel costs of Milford High School’s trip to the Mock Trial national competition are welcome. Send contributions to Milford High School, c/o Mock Trial, 100 West Street, Milford, NH 03055.
