Samuel A. Alter, Jr.
Samuel A. Alter, Jr., a former assistant city attorney for Concord, died Jan. 27, 2003, following a brief illness. He was 74.
Alter was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on Oct. 21, 1928. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Business Administration and the University of Miami School of Law in 1952. Following a short stint as a "repo man," he was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1952 and commenced his legal career as an assistant state attorney for Dade County.
An assignment for the Dept. of Justice brought Alter to NH, where he passed the NH Bar exam and in 1976 began working as assistant city attorney for the City of Concord and later as a special assistant to the U.S. Attorney for the District of NH. He worked in NH until 1979, when he returned to Florida to serve as supervisory assistant United States attorney for the Northern District of Florida, where he was responsible for the management of criminal and civil litigation in the Pensacola and Panama City divisions. He retired in 1996 after serving 17 years in that position.
In 2002, the New Hampshire Bar Association recognized Alter for his 50 years of service to the legal profession. Despite his lengthy legal career, however, Alter said he considered his marriage his greatest accomplishment.
Alter is survived by his wife, Patricia; son Dale (Tena) Hinds, of Wayne, Me.; daughters Margaret (Leon) Fredette of Portsmouth and Melissa Alter and Monica Douglass, both of Pensacola, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to a favorite charity.
In memory of our colleagues Lester T. Crane, Jr. and Samuel A. Alter, Jr., the New Hampshire Bar Association’s Board of Governors has contributed to the New Hampshire Bar Foundation, 112 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301.
